Family History in the Virginia Room

Genealogy is one of the top three most popular hobbies in America.  October has been designated as Family History Month to draw attention to the pleasure and satisfaction to be found in exploring one’s heritage.  Tazewell County Public Library can help visitors discover their family history in this region.

The Virginia Room includes about 1500 volumes of published history, biography, records of the census, births, marriages, land transactions, tax assessments, wills, deaths, and cemeteries, newspapers, maps and gazetteers, as well as how-to guides to research.  Library visitors are alerted to a new traffic pattern in this collection: it is being rearranged to make it easier to use.

The Library subscribes to an online tool, Heritage Quest, which includes all available federal census records and is searchable by name, locality, and year.  Heritage Quest is available for use in the Library as well as from home.  From the Library’s home page at, click on Electronic Resources, then scroll down to Heritage Quest, click, and enter your library card number.

Photographs collected by Tazewell County Historical Society are archived at the Library.  Most have been published in the Society’s Albums of Tazewell County, Virginia, and many are accessible online, linked at the Library’s website.

Cyndi’s List,, is a portal to an extensive, well-organized collection of more than 264,000 links to genealogy websites and should be added to any genealogist’s list of Favorites or Bookmarks.
