Getting A Card
| Who |
A person must be at least 5 to get a card. A person over 18 will be issued a purple adult card. A person under 18 will be issued a yellow juvenile card. If under 18, a parent or legal guardian must come to the library in person to sign for a juvenile's card with proof of identification and address. |
| What |
A current library card in good standing allows users to borrow materials including books, audiobooks (tape and CD), films (VHS and DVD), magazines, kits, SOL bags, and more! It also allows users to access |
| Where |
TCPL cards work for the public libraries in Bluefield Virginia, Richlands, and Tazewell. |
| When |
Library cards are valid for 1 year. When a library card expires, public computer use will be denied. To renew a library card (it's free!), a borrower must come to the local library and verify a current address and telephone number. |
| Why |
It's free! |
| How |
To apply for a card, a patron fills out a form in person at the library and provides proof of identification and address. The library accepts a driver's license, passport, VA identification, DMV statement, utility bill, tax statement, printed checks from a local bank, or lease agreement. |
| |
If a new borrower does not share an address with someone currently in the library system, the library will send a postcard to the address given to verify it. Library staff will hold the borrower's card until the borrower physically returns the postcard to a library staff and receives a library card. Until the postcard is returned, borrowers may check out up to 2 library items and use the public computers. |
| Remember |
By signing the application form, a library patron agrees to comply with the rules of the library, including the public computer use policy, and to pay whatever fines may incur for damage or loss of library materials. Replacing a lost library card is $1. A parent or legal guardian must be present for a minor to replace a card. |
Using Library Material
| Returning Material |
To avoid fines, return library material on time in good condition. Borrowers may return material at any of the three library buildings (with the exception of interlibrary loans). All buildings have book drops for after-library hours. Any library material may be returned in a book drop with the exception of an Interlibrary Loan. |
| Requesting A Renewal |
Borrowers may renew library materials in person, by telephone, or online. Materials will not renew if someone else has requested the material, and fines will acrue for overdue material. |
| Reserves |
Library patrons may reserve material that is already checked out or at another library location. Contact library staff to place material on reserve. Reserves are filled in the order received. Borrowers will be notified by telephone when the material is available. Reserve material is held for 7 days. |
| Borrow Responsibilities |
Borrowers must treat material with appropriate care and return borrowed library material in good condition. Borrowers must not remove book jackets, write on materials, spill liquid on materials, or leave materials in cold or hot vehicles or environments, or otherwise damage library material. Items that are returned damaged or lost will be assessed a fine. |
| Overdue Notices |
Overdue fines are calculated by the automation system daily on days the library is open. Mailed notices are generated 7 and 14 days after an item is due and mailed within 2 business days. |
